WalletHub placed Scottsdale, Gilbert, Chandler, Tempe, Peoria and Mesa in the national top 30—and Scottsdale ranked third in the country.
My local take: Neither the rankings nor the cities surprised me. I’m a Phoenix native and full-time REALTOR®, and these are places relocation buyers ask me about constantly. What’s more useful is why each city ranked where it did, because these cities are very different once you’re driving around them and looking at homes.

What does a “happiness ranking” actually measure? WalletHub did not call people and ask whether they were having a good Tuesday.
The study compared 182 large U.S. cities using 29 weighted measurements . The underlying data were collected by February 10, 2026.
Emotional and physical well-being: 50% Life satisfaction, depression, adequate sleep, physical health, sports participation, life expectancy, food insecurity and related measurements.
Income and employment: 25% Income growth, poverty, job satisfaction, unemployment, underemployment, bankruptcy, weekly work hours and drive time.
Community and environment: 25% Parkland, weather, leisure time and measurements connected with community well-being.
This is a weighted comparison of health, finances, work, environment and quality-of-life indicators. WalletHub chose the measurements and their weights, so a different formula could produce a different order. Some inputs were only available at the state level, meaning they cannot distinguish one Arizona city from another.
Scottsdale: #3 in America Scottsdale ranked #3 overall, #2 for community and environment, #11 for emotional and physical well-being and #14 for income and employment .
WalletHub reported that more than 88% of adults had good or better physical health and nearly 87% participated in physical activity . Scottsdale also had the third-lowest share of adults reporting 14 or more mentally unhealthy days during the previous month.
Scottsdale stretches roughly 31 miles from north to south . Old Town, McCormick Ranch, Central Scottsdale and North Scottsdale can feel completely different. The northern part of the city also connects into the McDowell Sonoran Preserve and its extensive trail system.
When somebody tells me, “We want to live in Scottsdale,” my next question is basically: Which Scottsdale?
Gilbert and Chandler: both top 15, but not identical Gilbert ranked #9 overall , including #6 for community and environment, #14 for emotional and physical well-being and #27 for income and employment. WalletHub also placed Gilbert fourth nationally for sports participation and fourth for the lowest separation and divorce rate.
Chandler ranked #14 overall , including #10 for community and environment, #19 for emotional and physical well-being and #52 for income and employment.
They sit next to each other in the East Valley and finished only five places apart. If you are choosing between them, your budget, workplace, home style, schools, neighborhood age, lot size and normal drive times will affect your daily life more than the difference between #9 and #14.
Tempe and Peoria: three places apart, one huge category split Tempe ranked #20 overall . Its strongest category was income and employment at #15, followed by community and environment at #26 and emotional and physical well-being at #31.
Peoria ranked #23 overall . It placed #7 for community and environment, #37 for emotional and physical well-being and #81 for income and employment.
Tempe and Peoria landed only three places apart overall, yet their income and employment rankings were 66 places apart . That is exactly the kind of difference hidden by the headline ranking.
Mesa: #29, and one city name covers a lot of ground Mesa ranked #29 overall, #25 for community and environment, #36 for income and employment and #52 for emotional and physical well-being . Its total score was 61.40.
Mesa covers approximately 138 square miles . West Mesa near Tempe is not the same housing search as Northeast Mesa near Las Sendas and Red Mountain, and neither resembles newer development farther east.
“Mesa ranked #29” is useful context. “Where in Mesa should I live?” requires a completely different conversation.
Phoenix ranked #56. Does that mean Phoenix is less desirable? No. People moving here often use “Phoenix” to mean two different things.
The City of Phoenix is one municipality. Greater Phoenix is the larger metropolitan area containing Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Peoria and many other communities.
WalletHub ranked the City of Phoenix #56 while six other cities inside the metro ranked in the national top 30. Phoenix itself also contains very different areas, from Ahwatukee and Arcadia to Central Phoenix, Desert Ridge and North Phoenix.
The city name is only the first layer of the search.
How relocation buyers should actually use this ranking Use the study to generate questions, not answers .
Scottsdale caught your eye? Decide whether you mean Old Town, McCormick Ranch, Central Scottsdale or North Scottsdale.
Gilbert versus Chandler? Compare what the same budget buys, your normal drive times and specific neighborhoods.
Tempe looks interesting? Look at where you will work and which part of Tempe fits your housing needs.
Peoria ranked #7 for community? Compare that strength with where you will spend most of your week.
Mesa offers more possibilities? Get far more specific than “Mesa.” Location inside the city can completely change the search.
Then test the ranking Drive the exact streets, compare homes and evaluate the daily life—not just the city score.
What I would compare next Once you have two or three cities on your list, compare the things you will actually experience every week:
What does your budget buy? How old are the homes and neighborhoods? How much yard do you want? HOA or no HOA? Pool or no pool? How long is your normal drive at the time you would make it? Where are your restaurants, grocery stores, gyms and activities? Do you want trails nearby? Established landscaping or newer construction? How much exterior maintenance do you want? Which schools are you actually considering? What does the street feel like at 8 a.m., 3 p.m. and after dark? What could affect resale later? And yes, drive the actual neighborhood . A city can look fantastic on a spreadsheet and still be completely wrong once you are sitting at the light you will apparently be sitting at every weekday for the next seven years.
So, are people happier in Greater Phoenix? WalletHub’s 2026 study gives Greater Phoenix a strong showing. Six cities landed in the top 30 nationally, three made the top 15, Gilbert and Peoria performed especially well for community and environment, Tempe stood out more for income and employment, and Scottsdale finished third in the country.
I would not move to a city because WalletHub said its residents were happy. I would use the study to build an initial list, then determine which neighborhood, house and daily life actually make sense .
